Swift Transportation Orientation

Congratulations on joining the Swift Transportation driving team. You are on your way to a great driving career with Swift, and we look forward to your attendance at the Swift orientation nearest you.

Please review the following information below as you prepare for your arrival at the terminal. We also have some helpful hints to assist you in reaching your career goals and we are excited to have you join the Swift driving team.

Orientation is 3 full days.

Be on time to orientation.

If you are staying in a hotel, bring an alarm clock to ensure proper arrival time.

Be alert and attentive.

You must be able to pass a D.O.T. physical, alcohol/drug screen, and Work Well exam - no exceptions. You may want to bring a healthy snack and avoid caffeine due to the D.O.T. physical.

Based on the results of your road test and your previous driving experience, you may need to go out with a Mentor for 1 to 6 weeks. If this is the case, be prepared to leave with a Mentor directly from orientation and the possibilty of being gone for up to 6 weeks.

All Swift Terminals have a zero tolerance of the use of/or possession of drugs and/or alcohol, and the possession of weapons.

Dress Standards

  • Shirt with collar must be worn.
  • Slacks or jeans are acceptable.
  • Boots, leather street shoes, or tennis shoes.
  • Hair must be clean and neatly groomed.
  • Beards and mustaches must be neatly trimmed.
  • No excessive amount of jewelry.
  • Shorts are not allowed in the classroom or road training.

    The following attire is not appropriate.

    • Tank tops.
    • Scandals (no open-toed shoes)
    • Halter-tops
    • No shorts allowed.
    • Any attire with vulgar or inappropriate sayings or gestures.

Drivers must have a valid Class A CDL license to attend orientation.

All driver applicants must complete a road test with the exception of those driver trainee applicants who have graduated from a Swift approved truck driving school within 60 days previous to application. Applicants completing a Swift road test must exhibit the skills necessary to pass the road test.

Failure of the road test will require applicant to participate in Swift’s training program for a period of 1 – 6 weeks, depending on the amount of training needed.

Drivers with 6 months or more of experience is considered a first seat driver, and does not have to go out with a Mentor, if they passed his/her road test. Experience must be within the last 5 years.
